| A little about the Swan Library |
Swan Library was chartered as a Free
Association Library for the Village of Albion in December 1899,
and opened March 17, 1900. The library was established with a legacy
from William Gere Swan administered by his wife, Emma Swan. Mrs.
Swan used some of the money to purchase the Burroughs mansion, built
in 1851, then had it gutted and converted to a library. The remainder
of the funds were used to establish an endowment fund to run the
library.
Eventually the endowment fund was found to be inadequate and funding
was sought from the surrounding towns, the county, the village,
and eventually the school district as well. At the present time,
the majority of the funding the library receives is voted upon by
the school district taxpayers each year. The library has grown to
fill all three floors, with the library archives being housed in
the attic.
In 1993, the library charter was amended to coincide more closely
to the school district boundaries. However, in fact, the library
serves all of Orleans County.
